The Spruce and Alders are two parts of the house that have been completely reconstructed after this side collapsed. These two trees are different but similar, both love the shade and water and sheltered wildlife. The branches of the spruce grow down to the base of the trunk, and below these we used to rake up pine needles to use as bedding for the calves.
The spruce is an evergreen, so it should never change, no falling leaves, nothing different. But at the foot of the tree lie soft, inviting pine needles where the roe deer hide. I used to hunt black grouse with my father in the Ranzola Pass area. They took flight from below the branches, I can still remember that unmistakable sound as if it were today.
